$300 Cash Giveaway

Welcome to the $300 Cash Giveaway!

Sponsored by Michael Phillip Cash.

Schism was recently chosen as a BOTYA 2013 Finalist in Science Fiction. To celebrate, Michael Cash would like to offer a everyone a chance to win $300.
On the planet Darracia, an ever-widening social gap between its inhabitants is causing turmoil that is fracturing a once peaceful world. Struggling with his identity, nineteen year old Prince V'sair must harness the power of the elusive Fireblade, the secret to a warrior's heart, in order to overcome his uncle Staf Nuen's lust for supremacy. Will the energy of the Elements guide the young prince to his true destiny or will Staf Nuen conquer Darracia?

Dii, an Amazon reviewer said:
"Does intolerance of people’s differences go beyond our planet? What of jealousy and the quest for power? Is it thicker than blood? Schism by Michael Phillip Cash is a fascinating and intense dark fantasy/Sci-fi filled with everything that makes for excellent, magnetic reading! Prejudice, love, greed, trust, the lust for power, deceit, cruelty and bloodshed, it’s all here in the first book of what looks to be an amazing journey to another planet somewhere in the heavens.
The ever-widening gap between the different classes is causing unrest to the once peaceful plant of Darracia, the haves get more, the have-nots lose what little they have and are beginning to fight back. Considered inferior to those around him, young Prince V’sair struggles to be seen as warrior material, in spite of his smaller stature and different skin coloring. He is a half-breed, part Darracian, part Planta. Smart, filled with knowledge from books, he still longs to feel the power of the Elements in the Fireblade, a weapon that can only be wielded by one blessed with a warrior’s heart. Forbidden to risk his life in a quest to find the powerful weapon, V’sair chafes at being trapped between wanting to help his people and needing to obey the King and Queen. But there is more to the unrest among the classes than meets the eye. Someone nearby is a traitor and it may be up to V’sair to save his world, but how? Unprepared for what awaits him outside of his castle, V’sair finds strength in love, honor and in believing in himself as he stands against the odds and the evil betrayers around him.
No doubt about it, Michael Phillip Cash can build a world with depth and clarity and then populate it characters that one can see in their minds. Soar above the clouds on a flying horse-type creature, feel the tension, feel the fear and wonder of V’sair as he runs into danger, faces near death and the love of a girl whose skin is as red as his is blue. Mr. Cash introduces each character with ease and enables the reader to see who to watch for, who to root for and who to hiss at. He has created magic with his words that transport you into another world as good battle evil in the takeover of Darracia and a boy becomes a warrior with heart. As the foundation from which this series will build, Schism is a powerful testament to the power of the imagination when guided by a masterful storyteller."

Book 2, Collision: The Battle for Darracia (Book 2) (The Darracia Saga) is now available on Amazon.
After the success of his first three books (Brood X, Stillwell, and The Hanging Tree) Michael Phillip Cash is fulfilling a dream and creating his own epic fantasy world. The third book in the series is coming soon!

Raising a Father

Lately on Facebook I've seen a few of these Fatherhood Involvement commercials being shared around as well as that image of the little boy playing with dolls (seen below) and it has certainly got me thinking.

I'm a pretty open minded mother and offering gender non-conforming toy options is very important to me when raising my daughter, not to mention, I also run a family daycare. So having "boy toys" for boys is something I keep in mind. However, I don't have a son yet and haven't given much thought to how I will be with my boy.

Growing in in Texas and with a Mexican father, masculinity is a focus from a very early age. When my brothers (3 and 5 years younger than me) would attempt to play with my Barbies, my father would freak out and tell them they are boys and those toys weren't for them.

Looking back, most of the interactions like that between my father and brothers were pretty impactful. They still stick in our minds even today. Now we, well just me right now, are parents and it is our turn to decide how we want to handle those situations.

How should we act?

Should we stop dead in our tracks and rip the "girl toys" out of their hands? Should we tell them those toys are for "girls" with a penetrating tone and demeanor so it "gets through to him"? ....I think not.

Let's take a step back and remember what kids are doing when they play...they're learning! In playing sports, children learn learn values like working as a team, taking turns, being supportive to others, self control and perseverance.  It was not that long ago that it was believed girls should not play sport and it was over looked that they could learn those values as well.

By denying boys the opportunity of playing with dolls or "girl toys" are we repeating history?

What values could a little boy learn from playing with dolls?

Those opposing boys playing with dolls might say he would learn to "act like a girl". So, let's break that down.

What does it mean to "act like a girl"?

To be compassionate towards others.

This is NOT just a "girl" thing. We see this when a lil girl (or boy) mimics their mother or caregiver by rocking a crying baby (doll) or kissing the doll's boo-boo. Many of the first responders in the Boston Marathon bombing were men. So, why would it be bad for your son to learn and practice this value at an early age? Not to mention, I know a few wives out there that wish their husbands did more of this. haha

Put the needs of others ahead of their own.

Not just a "girl" thing and again something some women wish their husbands and boyfriends did more of. But seriously, this value is commonly learned when a family pet is present in the house. Why is it ok for little boys to feed the dog but not feed the baby?

To be gentle and graceful

Once again, not just a "girl" thing. Back to the family pet. Having a pet in the home teaches the child not to be rough with other living creatures. However, there are not many other scenarios to reinforce this. The entrance of a new sibling or younger relative may be the only time this comes up, especially if a family pet isn't present. By allowing a boy to play with a doll helps him recall this on their own and practice it.

There are many more values that girls possess that boys can benefit from as well. These are just a few but there are many more.

Feel free to leave a comment. Share with us your experiences you have with your children. What other values do you think we could add to this list?

Happy Tuesday!

Our NEW clothing labels

As a kid, my favorite thing about back to school time of year was new supplies. So naturally, I really love getting new supplies. I've just started making dresses for my shop so what does that mean? Clothing labels!!! I knew just where to go! Vintage Laundry and Custom Couture Label Company!

Some of my favorite things about working with Custom Couture Label Company is working with Dianna. She is super friendly and professional. She answered my questions via Etsy really quickly. I'm talking fast. So fast that I was able to send a handful of messages to her and process my order all within a hour or two. And my favorite part is that when I woke up this morning she already sent my proof for approval!

Another thing I love about working with Dianna is that she is a SAHM (Stay At Home Mom for you non-mommies). Her superb customer service is really a testament to her dedication to her business without sacrificing her family. I know first hand the difficulties of juggling the role of motherhood with that of  small business owner.

Don't you just love the washing care instructions?!! I sure do! I wish I could take credit for it but that belongs to Laura at Vintage Laundry. She has various color versions of this design to fit all different companies. Don't see your colors? Don't worry. She has a custom listing to change color scheme or wording. The best part is that its on SALE!! So head over to her Etsy Shop and snag them before the sale ends.

Step 2: Care Instruction Design

Next, you'll need to head over to Vintage Laundry and purchase the design you like best. Prefer your own color scheme or want to change a few words? No problem! She has several custom label listings to accommodate anything from a specific color scheme to minor change add-ons.

Step 3: Clothing Label Style and Quantity

Lastly, head over to Custom Couture Label Company's Etsy shop and purchase the style and quantity of labels you prefer. She has many different types of labels from satin to twill and woven damask to iron-on and even inkjet printable paper for you DIYers out there. After purchasing, you'll need to message Dianna with your logo file and the care instruction file you would like her to add to the back of the label.

The Power of Pinterst

We all hear that Pinterest can be a great tool for marketing your business, but have you see its power first hand yet? I have. Sort of.

On my personal Pinterest account I have a pin from when I was first pregnant with Eva and it is still going strong to this date. It's nuts. I pinned one product from Etsy that I like and I current have.....are you ready??....2255 repins and 286 likes!!!

HOLY SMOKES, right?!

Boy I wish that was one of my products repinned so much, but all in all I'm sure I have most of my followers from it. Which means every time I pin one of my products it come up on their feed. I mean, how many times do you come across a pin you like and decide, "heck, this person pins nice stuff...I'll just follow her whole board"....or better yet "all her boards!"

So when you post a new product on your Etsy shop. PIN! PIN! PIN! Why not delete and repin! lol

Pin Party?!

On that note, let's have a Pin Party. Leave us a comment with the link to a pin of your favorite creation and let the pinning begin!!

Happy sewing everyone!

DIY Comic Shoes

Original photo by All Day Chic

This month's theme at the monthly pop-up shop The Express is Comics. So, in honor of them I wanted to share this simple and creative DIY tutorial on how to make Comic Book Flats.

smooth flats or other shoe style
Comic Book
Mod Podge
Foam brush

Let's get started!

Cut out pieces of comics in various shapes. Determine your preferred placement. Then apply Mod Podge to the back of the clipping and position on the shoe and once more after you have positioned it where you want. Continue all the way around being sure to cover all areas of the shoe as well as creating a smooth edge around the top of the shoe. You don't want to scratch your foot when putting it on after it has dried. Mod Podge acts as both glue as well as a varnish. You want to apply a minimum of 3 layers of Mod Podge to fully secure the clippings to the shoe as well as protect the prints from wear and tear. Allow Mod Podge to dry completely between applications.

Have fun! Feel free to post links to your blogs, pins or tweets showing our finished product!
